La Falaise Hotel in Cotignac hosts the “Art in Progress” exhibition by Peter Burwinkel – an artistic invitation to explore a constantly evolving creative universe.
Originally from northern Germany, near Bremen, Peter Burwinkel began his artistic career at the age of 15 under the tutelage of the artist W. Hauptmeier. Although family circumstances prevented him from studying art at a certified academy, Peter developed his talent for painting, graphics and sculpture at home and with self-study. After making Italy his home in the 90s, he took part in several exhibitions in Milan, Treviso, Piacenza, Palermo, Venice, Paris, Innsbruck and Cologne. In 2008 he was a finalist for the “Premio Arte Italia” prize.
Since 2016, Burwinkel has lived in the Netherlands, where he works and makes a living as an artist. In 2019, he crafted his unique exhibition series “Art in Progress” in Düsseldorf, a project which was well-received but was unfortunately interrupted by the pandemic. Today, this exhibition is being reborn in Cotignac, where Peter has lived since 2020. The exhibition is remarking in its ‘living’ nature and consistently evolving design. Burwinkel does not just exhibit completed works; he aims to transform the exhibition space into an active workshop where visitors can observe the creative process in real time. The works on display will change regularly, offering each visitor a new experience each time. This new approach reflects Burwinkel’s commitment to slow, thoughtful creativity, where every detail is carefully crafted to ensure the final result is something special.
His painting style, a figurative realism tinged with bright colours and moving light, is inspired by masters like Munch, Hopper, Gerhard Richter, David Hockney, Peter Doig and Lucian Freud. Burwinkel draws his inspiration from urban and natural landscapes, captured through photographs which then serve as the starting point for his painting compositions. By combining these images, he creates works that reinterpret reality through a unique psychological lens.
